Fee receipts for tuition and hobby classes
Home tutors and small classes often take fees in cash or UPI without any receipt. A receipt takes a minute and avoids disputes.
Why give a receipt
- Parents know exactly which months are paid.
- You have a record of income for your income tax return.
- It looks professional and builds trust with new families.
Setting it up for a class
- Type your name or class name as the institute; leave affiliation empty if you have none.
- Use "Class / course" for the subject or level (for example "Guitar – Grade 2") and "Section / batch" for the batch time.
- One fee head is enough for most classes: "Monthly fee". Add "Registration fee" or "Material" only when charged.
- Choose "Not GST registered" unless you have a GSTIN.
When does GST start?
Tuition and hobby classes are taxable services. Registration becomes compulsory once your total fees in a financial year cross ₹20 lakh (₹10 lakh in a few special category states). After registering, charge 18% and give receipts with your GSTIN.
Cash and UPI
Choose the mode on every receipt. UPI payments leave a bank trail; cash should be deposited regularly so your bank statement matches your receipts.
This page explains the general position. For your own tax and registration questions, ask a chartered accountant.
